How to disable this feature?!

Hi,

This has bothered me from day one of using Vista several months back. File
or folder icons expanding in size as you drag them and hampering the
precision of dropping them precisely where you want. Many times I drag
something to to another folder for example and it doesnt go in. Why? Because
the expanded icon covers or blots out where you want to drop it, and if its
off you have to try again. I cant imagine any usefulness for this feature
whatsoever. I tried to disable many of the visual features, but none seem to
apply to this. So how can it be disabled?

Thanks
AM

This bothers me as well.
Perhaps there will be more response with a clearer subject line?

I'm not sure as to the problem you're having, since I don't seem to have any
problem with moving files/folders. I don't look at the icon while I'm
dropping a file/folder, I simply use the pointer as the guide.

Are the icons not transparent when you're dragging them? I could see where
this may be a problem, and I'm not sure why they wouldn't be because even
with the transparencies turned of in the GUI the icons are still transparent
while dragging.

Also, you don't have to have the icon right on the folder icon you're
dragging it to, as long as the pointer is touching some part of the folder
icon or the name of the folder it will be highlighted while you're over it
and while highlighted, releasing the button will drop the file/folder right
into the highlighted folder.

I would also like to add that I'm partially blind (I lost almost 50% of my
vision in my right eye just this year to an infection) and have no trouble
seeing to move/copy/drop/whatever files/folders using the new interface,
even with the "expanded icon" so again, I'm sorry, I don't have an answer
mainly because I simply can't understand the problem you're having.

Please, I'd like to help so if perhaps you could make a screen cap, or even
a short video clip and email it to me (that's my correct email address) so I
can see exactly what the problem you're having is?

The problem is illustrated here:

Map options are set to show small icons and details, but when dragging one
folder into another, the folder being dragged is shown as a large icon, much
larger than the folder icon one wants to drop the folder into.

I have this issue as well. Thought I was the only one till I had a
friend over copying some files to her laptop from one of my USB
drives. She dragged a selection of files over and then asked me, "How
the heck can I see where I am dragging these files to?" I told her,
"Welcome to Vista". Vista is NOT designed for efficient file
management. It is designed for general non computer users who keep
everything in 1 directory and never move files

Perhaps I'm not seeing the same thing as you folks, but when I grab a file
or folder and start dragging it folders become highlighted as I pass the
grabbed file or folder over them. When the place you want to drop the file
or folder becomes highlighted, you should be good to go.

This is about size ;-)
When View is set to show large icons, there is no problem.
It is only when View is set to show small icons in a list, that the problem
occurs: the folder icon *temporarily* , when dragging, changes to a much larger
icon than the 'target' icon.

It is not that dragging and dropping is impossible, it is just awkward.

Okay, now I can see what you're talking about, but I still don't see the
problem.

The folder under the pointer will highlight, you don't have to move the
folder/file to cover the folder or even the folder name in that view, you
can drag the file to the date and drop it right into the folder, also, if
you wait a few moments before dropping, you'll see a pop-up right under the
file you're moving (as shown in the picture you linked to) that tells you
right were you're about to move/copy the file.

I can also read all the folder names that are (albeit, I agree they could be
easier to see) obscured by the folder being dragged.

While I'll concede that the choice to make the file/folder being dragged
convert to the larger image when, logically speaking, it should remain the
same size as the current view setting, I simply don't see it as making
moving/copying files as difficult as you are describing.

As I said in a previous reply, I don't look at the icon for the folder I'm
dragging to "aim" with, the pointer is all that matters when directing
files/folders to a new location.

Of course, this is just my opinion, and as my step-father always says,
"Opinions are like an anus; everyone has one and they are sometimes full of
crap." (Paraphrased for the PG newsgroup. :-))

PS
Again, I must state that I am what you would consider partially blind, and
if I can see these as clearly as I can, no offense intended, just
considerate advice, you may want to have your eyes looked at if it is that
much of a problem that you often drop files into the wrong folders because
you can't see where they are going.

Well, I find it annoying and unlogical: I made the choice for small icons and
don't want bigger ones pushed onto me. Thanks for responding, though.
