How to disable SMART device warning?

Hello,

I have a hard drive array (raid 1) that recently reported a probable failure
SMART error. I believe this failure to be bogus, as it is most likely the
result of an unexpected power loss.

I'd like to figure out how to disable the ominous "backup your compuer and
replace your drive" message that vista is annoying me with, but I only want
to disable it for this message -- I still want to get future drive failure
messages.

Does anyone know if the "don't warn me about this again" disables all
warnings, or just dismisses the current warning?

Any assistance would be appriciated.

On an unrelated note, the formal "email" (er, web) support system on ms.com
didn't recognize my OEM vista product key (even though my vista is
activated), and wouldn't let me send a note to the MS professional support.
In fact, it gave a 403 error when I clicked on the "how to find your product
key" link.</rant>

SMART is usually BIOS based, it checks the drive during POST and reports
what the HDD (manufacturer installed/embedded) diagnostic software tells it.
SMART is supposed to be OS independant & is put there by the HDD maker to
warn you of a possible failure.
With most manufacturer's, a SMART warning is all that is required for a
warranty claim.

Microsoft does not provide support for OEM vistas. Support is provided from
the manufacturer of the system (i.e. Dell) with which the Vista came. (that
is why it is cheaper).

it is likely the hard drive(s) sustained some damage because of the power loss.
not when it goes off necessarily but the\ surge when it comes back on on on/off/on/off.
have had it happen tome. why I now use a GOODS UPS.

so far as the SMART detecting it is in the BIOS.
would not recommend turning it off.

look into getting the hard drive replaced if it is still under warranty.

For the background on S.M.A.R.T., start here:

Having seen the same error, I can only say: "Back up your data
daily until you replace that drive."

On those machines I on which I've seen those S.M.A.R.T. warnings,
catastrophic hard drive failures invariably followed. Some hard drives
lasted for a few days after the warnings first appeared, one lasted
months, and some lasted only minutes. I suppose the one that lasted
months could be considered a false alarm, as months hardly translate to
"imminent," but, on the whole, I'd suggest you take the warnings seriously.

Maybe, but I doubt it. More likely, it would mean that the sudden
power outage caused damage to the hard drive, as so often happens.

Vista has nothing to do with this; S.M.A.R.T. is a feature of the hardware.

As your EULA explains, Microsoft doesn't support OEM licenses; you'll
need to contact the computer manufacturer.

If you suspect a bad drive, you can use any Linux live cd. Run the cd.
Log in as root. From within the desktop, start a terminal, type
badblocks -v /dev/hda or /dev/hdb or dev/hdc etc
or
badblocks -v /dev/sda or /dev/sdb or /dev/sdc etc

If you see any errors while this program is running, you probably have a
bad drive..it will also give you the number of badblocks, if any.
Badblocks usually indicates that a drive needs to be replaced.
It will take several hours to run.
This program will run no matter what operating system you have.

after vista showed me the error 4-5 times i've seen the 3rd option ...
"do not display this warning (not recomanded)" and now it works ok

For those who think smart is absolutely right all the time .... i have
a seagate hdd with a lot of relocated sectors (~2500) that works
perfectly since oct 2007 (no more relocated sectors since than).... just
all the smart aware software keeps bugging me to backup and not use the
hdd...

You gambled and won. Most gamble and lose!
