How to Disable Automatic Search

Everytime I double click on a folder to open it, it
automatically tries to search that folder rather than
simply opening it. I have to right click on it and
select "open" from the drop down menu in order to view
the contents of the folder. The only folders that open
normally are My Documents and a Shared Folder on my
desktop. How to I stop it from searching????
