How to delete history in START/RUN?

Lisa

Hi there
I am going crazy. How can I delete the history stored in the Start/Run
folder? I downloaded TWEAKUI for Windows XP, but doesn't have the Paranoia
button. Please help me!

I did what you said. I reboot the computer. Then I went to start/run and
when I typed the letter "A" and a bunch of URL addresses came up.
This is very annoying. Is there another way to get rid of this list?
Thanks
Lisa

Lisa,

The information comes from two separate areas:

When you type-in a letter in Start, Run text box, the auto-complete list box
will be displayed, populated with entries from these two different areas:

- Entries in the RunMRU registry location
- Visited web pages stored in the Internet Explorer's INDEX.DAT file

RunMRU registry location
--------------------------
The history of most recently used commands from the Run command on the Start
menu are stored in the following registry location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \
Explorer \ RunMRU

The RunMRU entries can be erased by by clearing the Recent documents list in
the Start Menu and Taskbar Properties. See this KB for more information:

Display, Use, and Clear "My Recent Documents" on the Start Menu in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307875

To remove these RunMRU entries selectively, open Regedit.exe and navigate to
the above location. Highlight and delete the entries in the right-pane.

Visited web sites listing from the Index.dat file
----------------------------------------------

The entries that appear when you type something in the RUN box (but not
normally displayed when you click the drop-down), comes from the Index.dat
file that belongs to Internet Explorer. Using the Clear History button in
Internet Options General tab will help. If not, you may try completely
deleting the index.dat using the methods described in MS-MVP Mike Burgess'
site. http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

To prevent the web addresses from being displayed in RUN box, open Internet
Options from Control Panel. Select the Content tab, and click the Auto
Complete button. Under section Use AutoComplete for, uncheck Web addresses.
Note that un-checking this option also disables the CTRL + ENTER
functionality in Internet Explorer Address bar.

I think you may need to reboot your computer for the solution to work.

The URLs list is coming from the Index.dat, Gerry.
Please see my previous response also.

Mine does not list these:
- Visited web pages stored in the Internet Explorer's
INDEX.DAT file

Which index.dat? There are 16 on my system!

It could be an Internet Explorer setting. Mine is set to
remove Files when the browser is closed.

You seem to need to reboot to clear the entries in the
RunMRU registry location. That's my feeling but I
could be wrong.

Hi Gerry,

Internet Explorer's Index.dat

Do you have this option unchecked?

IE Options > Content tab > Auto Complete > "Use AutoComplete for" > "Web
addresses."

If this option is unchecked, the URLs list won't appear in the Run dialog.

Mine is set to remove Files when the browser is closed.

May be that's the reason. Also, the drop-down entries (URLs list) that I'm
referring to appear only if you begin typing an alphabet. Example.. Typing
in "e" lists all the webpage addresses that begin with e. Ref image

Searching from the address bar is set to "Go to the most likely site"!
This is most likely a default. I do not remember selecting it.

There are so many options there! Was it Ford, who used to say "You
can have any colour you want as long as it is black"! Microsoft do not
seem to be following that lead <g>.

You're welcome Lisa. BTW, did you use CCleaner or used the "Clear Cache
Feature for Internet Explorer" tool?
