how to delete file that says access denied, write protected

my norton systemworks had a problem and told me to uninstall, then reinstall.
Everything uninstalled except antivirus, and it wouldn't reinstall unless
those files are deleted. Tried to delete them amnually, but windows says
access is denied because it is running or write protected.
How do you delete files when access is denied?

Try using the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and under the "Processes tab,
look for NAVAPSVC.EXE and right click on it. Then, click on "End Process
Tree". This will stop Norton and all the other associated programs that are
using it. Once the program stops running, you will be able to delete the
Symantec (Norton) folders and files.

Norton protects itself and may not let you stop the process (even with Admin
priviledges). This is because most virus programs go after any antivirus
programs by deleting the files and processes, so antivirus companies write
delete-protection into the software.

Good Luck, and let us know if this helped.

If that fails (Norton probably blocks users from killing it's
processes), try going into the services manager by right clicking on My
Computer and selecting manage, then selecting Services and Applications
Services.

In the services window there should be a list of all the active
services running. Look for the ones relating to nortons and stop them.
This should kill the relevant active processes and allow you to
uninstall.

If that fails, you could always try the trusty safe-mode...
