How to Decline Critical update?

Hi All!

I'm running a Windows 2000 Server (SP4) as a standalone fileserver.
I've had the windows updates on "Automatic" for years without problem.

A few days ago though, it installed the KB925902 update, which is
described as "Critical". Unfortunately, when it tries to reboot after
that, it won't start. Gets to the point where the blue desktop
backgound is about to appear, and the whole thing "resets" (back to
the initial BIOS screen). Then the whole process starts over.

I was able to uninstall the update, and things were fine again. Just
to double-check, I installed it again, and sure enough...same thing.

Thing is, I can't see how to decline this particular update. Most
other updates have a check box for that purpose - but not this one
one. I'm guessing they don't want to make it easy to decline
"critcal" updates.

Bottom line, I now have auto-updates turned off, and things are
running well. I'd like to turn them back on, but I need to prevent it
from installing that update. Of course the other option is tracking
down WHY it's crashing, but I've done some searching, and there
doesn't seem to be many clues on this one.

Any ideas?

I hate when that happens....

I believe you can go the windows update page, and then select something
along to the lines to not show this update again... I can reproduce at this
minute to say for sure because I'm all up to date on this machine, but I
hope you'll be able to find it.

The other way I can think of is to use Windows Update Services.

I hope that helps.

Thanks Sam. Yeah, MOST updates will give you a chance to NOT install
them when you use the automatic mode of Windows Updates, but this one
won't. If I do the updates manually, I can choose to not install it,
but during an automatic run, whammo - it gets installed, and the
machine dies.

Anybody else with ideas? Is there a registery "hack" to fool windows
into believing the update has already been installed? That way it
won't try to do it again.

Or is there some way to substitute some kind of "dummy" program for
the update? That way it "runs the update", but nothing *really*
happens.

Thanks!
