How to debug critical error 101 (please help)

E

Emma Johnson

I read the critical error 101 help here and on the usenet.
Basically the suggestion is to reinstall & reboot.
This doesn't work for me.
I've reinstalled & changed & booted many times.

So, my question is different.

Pray tell, How do we DEBUG this critical error 101?
That is, what are the steps to TEST the system?
Also, should I email (e-mail address removed) for help?

TIA,
Emma J.

PS Here is the complete error on windows xp sp2:
Error Loading Microsoft AntiSpyware (on the blue bar).
Warning, Microsoft AntiSpyware has encountered a critical
error (Error 101). Please restart Microsoft AntiSpyware
again. If you continue to experience this problem, please
contact Microsoft technical support at
(e-mail address removed) for immediate assistance.

I found this Antispyware Beta program yesterday and
downloadad to my laptop, ran the program through its
recomendations, and after carefuly reading all the
instructions I figured this is a Microsoft program, how
could this harm my computer. Well after the scan, it
found about 43 items, most for deletion, a couple for
quarintine. So I went through the steps then rebooted, I
lost my task bar at the bottom, had a fatal system error
101, and it commanded shut down by NT Authority\system, a
box pops up for a one minute countdown then restarts,
over and over. I have tried to start in safe mode, same
issue. I contacted Microsoft support, waiting for a reply
now. Can ANYBODY help me with this problem? - O'Neill

I ran the suggested command:
Start / Run / cmd / ENTER /
C:\My Programs\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exe -Embedding

But, all I got was the Microsoft error:

C:\My
Windows cannot find 'C:\My'.
Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.
To search for a file, click the Start button, and then
click Search.

I am POSITIVE the location of the antispyware is in:
C:\My Programs\Microsoft AntiSpyware\
so I am *SURE* I didn't type it incorrectly.

I must have done something intuitive or wrongly not?

When the path to the executable includes spaces, you will need quotes around
that path or portion of the path.

Are you certain of that location? Most people have programs installed in
something like c:\program files\Microsoft etc etc.

Either way it has a space--try this:

"c:\my programs\microsoft antispyware\"gcasDtServ.exe -Embedding

When I substitute "program files" for "my programs" that works on my
system--or at least it executes without error--I've no idea what this is
supposed to do!

Hurrah! Your suggestion worked!

I put QUOTES around the file name & it ran w/o error!
Start/Run/Cmd/ENTER
C:\"My Programs"\"Microsoft Antispyware"\gcasDtServ.exe
-Embedding

Interestingly, this didn't seem to do anything at first.
But it didn't give an error either. (whew)
So, after a few minutes I re-ran the GIANT antispyware
program.
Guess what? The Giant antispyware program RAN FOR THE FIRST
TIME IN TWO DAYS!

Hurray! Thanks for the hints!
This is great help!

I just wonder why Microsoft says it handles spaces in file
names when it clearly does not!

Harro,
Your suggestion worked like a charm!
I typed into the Start/Run/cmd/Enter line:
C:\"My Programs"\"Microsoft Antispyware"\gcasDtServ.exe
-Embedding

At first, nothing happened.
But the next time I ran the Giant spyware program,
everything worked for the first time in two days!

My question is about this magic.
What does this command actually fix?
What changes does it make to my system to make it work?
Is it doing any damage?

I got the same thing (Error 101)...i've tried all the
solutions that were suggested, any other suggestions?

I've already contacted (e-mail address removed) and I am
waiting for a response.

NOTE: i checked the error log in the target's (microsoft
antispyware) location...it says in the log that access
was denied everytime I tried to start the antispyware.
The weird thing is...I am the adminstrator of this
computer...why would I be denied access?

Terrific--Thanks for posting this information--it should be helpful to
others seeing the same error.

I get the same errpr 101 on a 2 user XP machine, I
installed user1 and it works ok there. But when I bring
up user2, this is when I get the same error you do!

The same thing happened to me. Im user1 and it works for
me, but not the other users. I emailed
(e-mail address removed) and they told me
"MicrosoftWindows AntiSpyware is a BETA product and is
not supported throught this alias. The error you received
pointed you to this alia in error" and then they
dirrected me here.

Here's the fix recommended by Microsoft so far:

Open up control panel and double-click on add/remove programs.
Select Microsoft AntiSpyware
Select "Change"
On the Microsoft AntiSpyware Maintenance Wizard, click next.
On the next screen (Microsoft AntiSpyware Maintenance Wizard) select Update
Microsoft AntiSpyware and click next.
Select Install
Let the product update.
Click Finish.

If this fails, it may be worth uninstalling the product, via Control Panel,
add/remove programs--and reinstalling.

Please post back with your results?
