How to crash PowerPoint 2002 consistently on my machine

C

Cris

Hello,

Here's how I can consistently crash my PowerPoint 2002:

I open any presentation, click in the notes section, type
the characters "-->" without quotes. Autocorrection (or
whatever bloatware feature) will change this into a
special character (arrow), and PPT 2002 will go into an
infinite loop consuming 100% of CPU until I kill it with
task manager.

I have sent numerous reports using the Windows XP feature
bug reporting, despite the fact that this is doing
testing for Bill Gates on my time. There's no way to bill
him for it ;-) I thought MS beta testers got free copies
of the software?!

It happens consistently on my machine. Does anyone else
see this? Please don't tell me NOT to type these
characters, or to turn off autocorrection :)

Seems to work fine from here. Any chance you have a strange font installed?

Hi Chris,

What is the default language (Tools -> Language...)

I suspect that the text that you are typing is tagged as some variant of
French. The French proofing tools are notorious for causing this type of
problem across all of Office.

If this is the case then, in the short term, you can turn off background
spell checking (you didn't say that I couldn't recommend that) by turning
of "Check spelling as you type" in the Options dialog, or you can uninstall
the French proofing tools for Office/PowerPoint.

Long-term solution is to contact PSS to obtain the French Proofing tools
post SP-2 hotfix:

Is it just this particular character combo that gives you trouble or are
there others?

Smileys -- :)
for example?

You could try Tools, AutoCorrect, AutoFormat as You type, remove the check
next to "Smiley faces .... " etc.

Cris,
Please don't tell me NOT to type these characters, or to turn off
autocorrection
Does that mean you actually like the auto correction feature?
