Help ! ! !
"Nicholas" was kind enough to answer my cry for help a
week or so ago on how to install XP Professional on a home
computer. His advice was clear, concise, and accurate.
However, some of the data I gave him was not accurate. I
had two hard drives I wanted installed on this machine,
rebuilt by a store in the area. However, they apparently
did not give the second drive an address. In addition,
they partitioned the C: drive, although I had asked them
not to.
Consequently, when I was preparing to follow Nicholas'
instructions to install Windows XP, I moved all my
valuable files and programs to the D: drive, thinking it
was the separate hard drive. When XP asked me what to do
with the C: drive, I asked it to format the drive without
a partition.
I should have thought more about what was going on when
the XP install program asked me what it wanted me to do
with the D: drive, but I was too excited about how well
things seemed to be going.
At any rate, I gave no instructions to adjust, modify or
format D:, and the process finished. It was then that I
discovered the series of problems that left me in a
quandary. I hope someone can help.
The <Control Panel> <System> <Device Manager> <Disk
Drives> shows two hard drives, Maxtor GE020L0 and Maxtor
GL040J2. I have drives designated:
A: 3 ½" floppy
C: The hard drive onto which XP installed itself
D: A CDR drive
E: A CDRW drive.
If I insert a portable USB drive, D: and E: rename
themselves to E: and F:.
During start-up, the screen prints (in part):
IDE Primary Hard Drive
IDE Secondary Hard Drive
Can someone help me get the second physical drive to be
recognized and show me a way to retrieve the files from
the "unavailable space" on the C: drive?
In addition, the problem may be worse because I used the
backup copy of Dell's modified version of XP installed on
a new Dell machine I bought a month ago to rebuild this
machine. A daily message counts down the days left before
I have to register the program, and I'm assuming that I'll
be locked out of this machine.
If I need to, can I install a new Microsoft XP OS without
losing the data I've accumulated on the C: drive?
I sure hope so.
