how to convert mpeg to avi?

hello all experts and non-experts!
i am new to win xp.
i heard that i can convert mpeg files to avi using movie maker. is that
true? what compression method is the best? i need very good quality and my
movie is just from a digital camera. maybe i should use another program?

What's your brand and model camcorder... if it's a digital 8 or mini-DV one,
you should capture from it as DV-AVI files via firewire... no need to use
MPEG-2 files.

You can convert from mpeg to avi using VirtualDubMod
http://virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net/

Compression method = "no compression" is best. However note that converting
from one compression method to another can "never" increase quality... at
most it would preserve the original quality (for example converting to a
lossless compression format) but most often it would loose some quality
during conversion.

If your source files are all MPEG2 and you just want basic editing (cutting)
then you may better off using Cuttermaran

thx for the info. my camera is just sony dsc p-72 one year old.
whats the difference between mpeg 2 nad mpeg 4 file formats? whoch has
better quality?

MPEG-2 is the standard for SVCDs and DVDs and is higher quality than MPEG-4
files that are more highly compressed so they can play easily at very low
bitrates.
