Mpeg 2 to avi problem

I used papajohn's guide to creating an avi file from an mpeg 2 file. I used
the vdubmod method but my avi file is all blurry and poor quality (much worse
than the mpeg). What could I have done wrong? I used the panasonic compressor
thing and resized. Not sure if I did it right. What is ntsc?

What sort of Mpeg was it?
What size was the mpeg file?
720x576 (480)?
What quality was it, what was the compression rate used on it?
Where did the mpeg come from?
