Both have network cards and are just 5 feet apart.
I would like access to the files and HDs on the older system.
This system will not have a monitor or keyboard.
Can I do this by just running a cable from one network card to the other.
What settings do I need to change?

Connect them using cross over cable, run the network setup wizard, share/map
your drives.

You need to used a "cross over" cable. The 2 machines need
to be on the same subnet and workgroup. The help files
will tell you how to do this.

I was hoping you wouldn't say that. I don't have a cross over cable.

I can't find any help files.
I wish I could set up one machine and then the other. I only have one
monitor.

Any computer store will have one. They dont cost alot at all.
Not last night at 9 pm when I really needed to get this done..
I can get the cable but my real problem stems from having only one monitor
for both computers.
I don't know how to set up this network manually.

If you have only one monitor that's ok. You will only really need to connect
to the shares on the other computer. If you actually have to see the other
computers desktop, then a remote desktop program would work fine, xp pro has
one built in. (to setup the second machine just connect your monitor to it
or a switch may be available at radio shack). Once the second one is setup a
monitor isn't really needed.
