if you have only two machines
you can network them using a crossover cable

if there are more than two machines then you will need a hub
and use "regular" straight-through cables

specify the question?

the question is regarding Cables or Software Configurations?

Same username and password on the win98 machine as the win2k machine.

On the Win2K PC, create local user account(s), with non-blank
password(s), that have the desired access privileges to the desired
shares. Log on to the other PCs using those account(s), and you will
be able to access the designated shares, provided your network is
configured properly.

no...that's not what you do...

Yes, it is what I have to do in order to read shared folders&files on the
win2k machine from dte old win98 machine. The login name must be the same on
the win98 machine as the win2k machine (or maybe one of the other profiles,
byt haven't tried that yet).

When I'm sitting on the win98 machine, mavigating (windows explorer) into
"other computers" and to the win2k machine, an password-box will appear. It
ask only for pasword, no username.
however each machine should be in the same workgroup

In my case, they are.
