How to change appearance of closed envelope to open with 1 click

When a new message arrives in Outlook 2003, the envelope appears closed.
When you click on it and read it it still appears closed. You have to click
off to another message for it to show open. Prior Outlook programs opened
the envelop when you clicked on it once and you were assured you ahd read it
and whn you look at folders you were not confused as to whether deleted
messages ahd been read. How do I change it to open when clicked on? Thanks.

Check your preview pane options under Outlook's Tools->Options menu. You probably have it set to change when the selection changes rather than after a short time period.
