How to buy additional home license

I bought a PC with XP. It's registered to the computer. I
want to install the same CD of XP on another computer
tomorrow. I understand I can purchase a discounted
activation code for the second machine. Here's the
question: How the hell do I purchase the additional
license? I have spent over 1/2 hours screwing around
looking for a phone number and I want to get the other
machine going tomorrow.

If the PC came with XP, then you can't install that copy on another machine,
as its probably BIOS locked to the computer it was sold with. And the
license ties it to the machine it was purchased with.

Yes, additional licenses can be purchased, but at a savings of $10 US or so.
You'd do as well to just buy another XP CD.

Last but not least, your current copy is an OEM version, and expects to see
a CD key that includes that information. The Retail CD key that you would
get with an additional license would not work with the OEM version.

You would be better off purchasing a disk, rather than a license. You can
buy an OEM version for around $100 at a discount-type computer store. There
are restrictions, just like those on your computer that already has XP:
-Software is tied to the machine.
-Must do a fresh "clean install," which destroys your old data (back it up
on disks to be reloaded after XP installation)
-No tech support from Microsoft

If you have to have the second machine up and running XP tomorrow, you will
have to go shopping.

is it not the cd you get on store the same copy as all the
others!?! i think so. buying a license is a cool thing i
think. you could install it on many computers, just have a
newer cd key for each machine.

Yes you can buy extra licenses (see
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/addlic.asp). But
it's not generally a good deal. The problem is that Microsoft
sells additional licenses at only a small savings over the list
price. You're almost certainly better off just buying a complete
second copy from a discount source.
