Do a google search on winrar utility. It is capable of extracting iso
files.

XP's integrated CD Writing function cannot handle image files natively.
You'll need third party software such as Roxio's, www.roxio.com, Easy CD
Creator or Nero, www.nero.com.
Check the websites for versions compatible with XP and drive compatibility.

I downloaded an ISO file and was told by tech support to burn it to a
CD to create a bootable CD ROM. How do I do this? The ISO file
apparently contains an image of a CD which must be extracted. Does
Windows XP have the smarts to automatically extract the contents of an
ISO file when copying it to a CD-R or CD-RW?

I believe this add on to the native XP cd burning software still works.
Otherwise you need third party burning software.

DVD Decrypter, freeware: http://www.dvddecrypter.com/ DVD Decrypter's
primary purpose is ripping DVDs but it also writes ISO images to CD-R
quickly and easily. Another bonus, besides the fact that it's freeware, is
that it's a standalone utility requiring no install- just unzip the download
into a folder and launch the exe. If you have no further use for DVD
Decrypter after burning this ISO, just delete the entire DVD Decrypter
folder and it will be gone.

Regards,
Ian.
