How to block Real update?

My Viao laptop came with Real One pre-installed. I wouldn't have chosen to install it but it's there. Now when I listen
to anything on line I get a whidow popping up with "Real One needs to update...blah blah blah" What really p1sses me off
is that the update launches itself almost immediately, so far I've managed to cancel before it has got into its stride.
However, one of these days I'm not going to be at the keyboard when this happens and Real will stuff a whole lot of
their bloated software up my *ss. How can I block this intrusive behavior for ever & EVER?

Open Real One. Under Tools>>>Preferences, there might be an
option to turn off automatic updating. If not and Real One
is really unwanted, it can always be deleted from the laptop.
And one can also use a firewall to block the connection back
to Real...that is, a real 2-way firewall and not the one that
came with Windows XP-SP2.

You could just uninstall it ( start -> control panel -> add or remove
programs )

Yep, that's what I'd do. And then download Real Alternative, if I
needed to listen and/or view Real content.

DEFINITELY. Faster loading, less intrusive.

My first attempt at answering this never posted, so I guess
all my cursing & swearing ran afoul of MS NG auto-kill.

Reposting a "sanitized" version.

I killed an earlier version or two of Real with the
following procedure. I haven't had any version installed
for over 3 years now - I don't need it - so I don't know
if it still works. If the directories referenced are still there,
it should. If not, use Task Manager>>Processes to monitor
what's going on to track down the miserable little dork like
I did.

Back up first.

UPDATE- (15 mins. later)

Just writing this (and getting mad again) gave me an idea.....

I ran Real Player then Message Center, and noted what happens
when you do this in Processes in Task Manager-

Message Center is actually RNDAL.EXE, which resides in
Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB.

I just moved the entire UPDATE_OB directory somewhere else, ran
Real Player, then clicked View>>Message Center, and guess what happened?

NOTHING!!!! Nothing, nothing, nothing!

NO MESSAGE CENTER!!!

Hot dang!!!

And I tried Player on other stuff, both streaming and local, and it still
SEEMS to work, and does not whine about anything.

So, maybe it's possible after all...if you try this, it's at your own risk.

I figure that the Player will NOT check for updates now, so if you need
a new one to play a new Real format, you won't find out about it until it
just stops working, but that's a small price to pay. I don't use any of the
other stupid features, like CD burning, all I want is to play
local/streaming Real clips, so I don't know/care if anything else is
impacted.

Probably if you try to uninstall Real Player, it'll look for the
non-existant directory and cough a hairball, so just keep it
somewhere so you can put it back if ya need to.

I'll post if anything bad happens.

Hi,
Does anyone know how to remove the "message center" that gets installed when
you install real networks realone player?
Thnaks

How do I delete the association between the .mp3 filetype and the RealOne player?

Make sure that the realplayer is not set to "autorestore" that
particular extension. Even if you constanty uncheck it in RP's "re-
associate" if autorestore is checked it keeps taking over.........I
found this out the hard way, it annoyed me that for some
reason no matter what I did RP took over. It should be in the
"preferences" portion under the tab named "upgrade".........

Good Luck!

So all those millions of $ spent to force M$ to unbundle Windows Media
Player has gone down the drain!! You guys are funny. You don't like M$
software and now you don't like alternatives. Do you just look or
fights and to criticize M$ products irrespective of monopoly or not!!
