How to block emails that come addressed to accounts not set up in

Can someone tell me how to set up a block from receiving emails (with viruses
& worms attached of course) that are addressed to non-existant emails
addresses that I have not set up, such as (e-mail address removed), or
(e-mail address removed), or (e-mail address removed), or worse yet, some email
address that doesn't even include my domain - almost like getting mail that
doesn't belong to me. Can someone at least explain how this mail even gets
into my mailbox when I don't have these accounts set up?

Thanks, I'm getting approximately 50 per day and each has a worm (that gets
removed by my email virus protection program) and it's really boring me to
death.

OL2003 has the option to block mail from certain top level domains such as
..au .ru etc, you can also just set the junk mail filter to "safe lists only"
this will then send all mail that you havent specifically said is safe to go
into the junk mail folder, once you are sure that you are only receiving
rubbish into that folder and nothing that you need to keep there is a further
option of "permanently delete suspected junk mail instead of moving it to the
junk mail folder" this can be found within the junk mail options from the
"Actions" menu, "junk E-mail" and "junk e-mail options" it has worked quite
well for me as I get between 25-50 junk messages per day...

Hope this helps

Join the club - there is nothing that you can do except to run a high junk
mail filter (I also use SpamBayes) and delete them when they arrive. You
are probably in a BCC so you don't see your address.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. All
unsolicited mail sent to my personal account will be deleted without
reading.

Thank you David, but I've tried that and my Junk Mail option and "safe sender
list" don't appear to be working. I'm still getting mail sent to the junk
folder even after I've added the email address to the "safe sender list" so I
have to check the Junk folder each time for good/wanted emails before I empty
the folder.
Microsoft probably should research this more and get us an up-date.
But, thanks for taking the time to reply. Happy Thanksgiving.

Rita,
what happens when you receive mail that is addressed to someone else
is that the virus sender has put your address into the Bcc: list of
addresses and therefore you cannot even see it. (Blind carbon copy)

But it is used by the mail system to get it delivered to your mailbox
notwithstanding...

I asked about this very same thing to my ISP a year or so back and
they explained it like this. But that ISP has moved on spam and has a
system-wide block for spam mail so it doesn't even get there. I am
only seeing a small trickle on that account even though it is known on
the Internet! (Thanks Telia!)
I have another account too, and this is as well-known as the other but
resides at an ISP without the spam block and here I get 50-100
spammails every day. Not all are removed by Outlook 2003, so I am
keeping my spam blocker (K9) in front of Outlook, which keeps my
mailbox almost 100% spam free. :)

This is something you set up at your domain, not on your email client.

Most website configurations allow the option of bouncing email addresses to
accounts which don't have specific forwarding rules.

First of all the K9 spamfilter is here:
http://keir.net/k9.html

It works only for POP3 mail clients like Outlook or OL Express.
It is put in front of the mail client by modification of the server
address in the way specified by the installation instructions for K9.

K9 then will get the email from the server when Outlook asks for it
and it will examine its contents and determine if it is spam. If found
to be spam it is marked in the headers with a special marker, no other
change to the email is done. And the mail is then forwarded to
Outlook.

In Outlook you must have a rule that examines if the marker thta K9
puts into spam mail is there and if so do something (I am permanently
deleting these emails).

It takes a week or so for K9 to learn what you consider spam and you
have to reclassify messages that get through with the wrong
classification(how this is done is described in the instructions).
During this period I moved marked mail to a K9 folder for manual
deletion, but after a week it was 100% accurate so I switched to
permanently deletion.
