how to become my own name server

ok, can you belive my ISP wants to charge me 29.99 a year per domain just to
add an entry into there name server for my domains. I told them thats like
hosting prices, im doing the hosting here what is the problem?

Anyway i have opened port 53, and have configured my dns server on a test
machine to reslove domain names from externaly and its working good. The
only problem is my registrar is reporting an error when i try to save my name
server. Does it HAVE to be prefixed with ns1.domain.com?

Mine is called a-oglobal.myftp.org and works fine. Here is an exerpt from
cmd.exe....

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

C:\Documents and Settings\MEvanchick\Desktop>nslookup
Default Server:
Address: 192.168.1.2
server a-oglobal.myftp.org
Default Server: a-oglobal.myftp.org
Address: 69.120.97.72
Server: a-oglobal.myftp.org
Address: 69.120.97.72

Name: www.fhorganic.com
Address: 155.212.114.183

As you can see its correctly redirecting a customer of mine to his webserver
but my registrar (godaddy.com) would not let me save "a-global.myftp.org" as
a name server. What gives?

Go to...

http://www.dns4free.com/

The current price for hosting a domain name (dns servers) is $10.00/yr.

If you register a domain with them, the dns is free.

Good GUI interface for dns management. I've been using them for a number of
year. No issues.

I think you'll find it more expesive in equipment and labor to host your own
external dns.

You can't just pick any old IP or FQDN to act as a name server. DNS servers
must be specifically registered as Name Servers. DNS service is perhaps the
most misunderstood part of the Internet. Unless you know what you are doing,
you are far better off to pay someone to act as DNS. Avoid the freebies; you
get what you pay for.

Well, you can register the name for $8 at Godaddy.com and they will
give you DNS for free.

In general, you are MUCH better off with the DNS at the registrar
anyway.

No. It has to match the records you registered when you BOUGHT the
name -- those that are stored in the parent (e.g., .com) zone.
Mine is called a-oglobal.myftp.org and works fine. Here is an exerpt from

Then it would be the records in the .org parent zone

Did you purchase the name yet? You cannot advertise it
publicly AND get it registered with the parent (.org) zone.

Go to GoDaddy and purchase it, and have them supply the
DNS for free (i.e., for the $8 you pay to register the domain
name they also do the DNS.)

Is thirty bucks gonna kill ya? Its gonna cost you more than that in reading
materials and a few hours of time before you will have a good enough
understanding to do it correctly. KEY WORD = correctly.
