Windows XP Home
Before I download the SP2, I would like to back up my
personal files & settings. According to the document I
downloaded from MS site; What to know before...., tells
me to go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System
Tools>backup. Problem is that I don't Have "backup" in my
system tool. Whay I have is 1)Character Map, 2)Disc
Cleanup, 3)Disc Defragmenter, 4)File and settings
transfer wizard,)5)Scheduled Tasks,6)System information,
7)System restore.
In System Restore I have 2 options, 1)Restore my computer
to an earlier time, 2)Create a restore point.
I would appreciate some help.
Thanks

NTbackup is not installed on XP Home by default. But if you have a full
windows installation CD it is in the ValueAdd\MSFT folder. If you don't
have a windows CD you can get ntbackup from here:

http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi

Note that this is a poor backup choice designed primarily for use with
tape drives. It won't backup to CD's without a 3rd party burning
program and even then won't span CDs. You should have a backup program
and be making backups regularly anyway so why not get a good one now? A
disk imaging program is best. It creates a compressed image of the
whole drive. Restores can be made either of the whole drive, or on a
file/folder basis. They are fast and easy to use. Some options are:

Symantec Drive Image
Norton Ghost
Acronis True Image
BootIt NG

Note: Backups should be done to removable media such as CD, DVD or an
external hard drive.

Stomp, Inc.'s Backup My PC is an excellent traditional backup program
that will backup to CDs and DVDs as well as external drives. It's a bit
pricey.

That backup does not come installed in XP Home. If you have a retail CD
you will find it there in ValueAdd\MSoft\Backup - r-click the
NTBAckup.msi and take Install.

It is very unlikely that it will have been supplied at all with an OEM
Home on a new machine. It is not a very good tool; it is tape based and
I think included only for the benefit of those coming forward from NT
(and hence to Pro) bringing existing tapes.

read Gary Woodruff's article on Files and settings Transfer at
http://aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm and see if that will meet your needs
