how to backup data

how can i backup data on a machine that wont let me access my desktop. I
need to do a clean install from xp cd because I cannot access my files.

why not get a trojan/virus scan first, then look for
malware/spyware? maybe you won't have to reinstall.

because i cannot access my desktop, therefore I cannot access my av software
or the internet. I cant even boot in Safe mode.
