how to add data to a chart

once you have a chart adding data is a nighmare and i still havn't managed to
do it. in excel 2003 you click chart, add data, then select the data usually
with a comma between x and y values, then one simple dialogue then done.

the new one you right click select data (there is no add data), then it
comes up with a box which is for editing the current series. then i click add
data and try to fill out x and y values in the different boxes but it doesn't
come out correctly. maybe it's something to do with row/column but that
option is greyed out.

what a nightmare user interface

Try selecting the data and drag it onto the chart or copy the new data, click
on the chart and then click paste. You might need to use paste special if
the resule is not what you want

Hi John,

Note drag & dropping of data on to charts has been deprecated in xl2007.

Cheers

You can add extra data from any sheet using copy and past. If that does not
work, right click on the chart and select source data. You can then add a new
series

thats fine if you have your data on the same page in columns next to each
other ect but i ussually have an xy scatter with each line coming from data
on different pages. for me i think the simplest way to add data to a chart is
to insert a new series but leave the boxes at the default. then goto the
chart page and select the new series which comes up as a dot somewhere, then
manually change the formula to point to my desired data. it's only something
i can going to need to do when working with data ranges too bit to fit into
excel 2003!

John -

Did you notice he's asking about 2007?

A. Copy the data, select the chart, and use paste special to control how
Excel adds the data to the chart.

B. On the Chart Tools/Design tab, click on Select Data. On this dialog you
can Add or Edit data for a series. I agree, the new dialogs for charting in
Excel 2007 are generally pretty bad: they are not well laid out, they are
unclear in their functionality, they often require extra mouse clicks to get
anything done.
