I want to add a line above a word. This is the opposite of underline. I
follow the instructions and all I can get is a box around the word. I
hichlight the word I want to have a line over, then click Format --> Borders
and Shading and in the Preview area I click the icon that looks like a line
above and a box appears with a line on all four sides of the word. Help!!

See http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/Overbar.htm. You may need to change
your line spacing to Exactly to ensure that the overbar doesn't affect it.

Thanks.
With Arial 10pt font, with exactly set to 10, 11, 12, or 13pt, the overbar
was not displayed. I had to set the exactly spacing to 14 pt to get the
overbar to show. This spacing is much larger than the single spacing of
adjacent paragraphs. Any suggestions to get the line spacing equal to single
and have the overbar display would be appreciated.

If the overbar doesn't display using spacing equivalent to Single, then
you'll need to apply the appropriate Exact spacing to all your text.
