How should I go about fixing this?

I have a Gateway 820GM. It has a CD/DVD/RW drive ( D:) and a DVD rom drive
(E:). I have no idea what I have done to cause this situation but, my D:
drive is missing in the My Computer folder and the drive bay will not open.
I have checked the the device manager and it (WDC WD2500JD-22HBB0) is shown
there in the drives folder tree. But, it doesn't operate. I use Real for my
media player and the program doesn't see the D: drive either. I can use my
E: drive. I know absolutely nothing about the windows registry and suspect
that my problem lies there. Any suggestions regarding how I can troubleshoot
this problem would be appriciated. Thankyou.

When you push the button on the front, you mean? You might open up the
computer and make sure everything is plugged in properly (IDE cable and
power, both). You could also try disconnecting the DVD-ROM (E) and
connecting the cables/connectors it was using, to the CD/DVD/RW (D) drive to
test.

It could be that the device is shot, note.

All that means is that at one point Windows could see it.

Doubtful; this really sounds like it's hardware-related.

Have you tried replacing the probably defective device?
