HOW???? - Reset Windows Update - Pls help

J

Jim

I have been having quirky troubles with Windows (surprise,
surprise)... So, in desparation I went ahead and re-installed Windows
2000... Actually I receovered it with the recovery option on the
CD....

Now my system and Windows Update are "out of synch" with one another;
Windows Update thinks I have service packs installed which are no
longer installed. How do I reset Windows Update so that I can get all
the service releases and updates again?

Greetings,

Use "Add/Remove Programs" to "uninstall" the SPs
you "don't have" then dowload/"reinstall" them.

Doesn't half sound confusing, does it!?

Kindest regards,

James

James,

Thanks for the suggestion... The trouble is, however that the SP's are
not in the WIndows uninstall list, because they are not installed.
Windows Update only "thinks" they're installed, because it maintaims a
list of everything it has installed, which is separate from the list
that the Add / Remove Programs item keeps in the Control Panel.
Somewhere, there is probably a file I can delete that contains this
list, then ActiveInstall will forget what's installed and try to
re-install all of it again. Alternately, if there is some way to
un-register that ActiveInstall control, that might work also.... Of
course, I have no idea what it's GUID is or whatever other registry
entries it might have... To say nothing of what file name it is in.

Greetings,

It should still work - have you actually tried it?

See this article, particularly point 4:

James,

Again, the problem is that the service packs are "NOT" in Add / Remove
Programs on the Control Panel. This problem ocured because I was
having other problems with Windows, and so I chose to re-install from
the Win2K CD. I chose to "Recover" my installation (So I wouldnt'
have to re-install 8,000 CD's of software)...

When I rebooted Windows, everything worked but, for example, I was now
rolled back to Internet Explorer 5. I went to run Windows Update, to
download all of the updates again for Windows. Problem was, that
Windows Update "THINKS" I still have IE 6 / SP1 installed when, in
fact I don't, to say nothing of Service Pack #4, or the 50-odd
security updates that needed to be downloaded.

I was able to go to the downlaod pages at www.microsoft.com and get
IE6 / SP1,and Windows 2K / SP4 but I now have no concise way to know
whether or not the updates that Windows Update "thinks" I have
installed are actually installed because, as I said, the two are osrt
of "out of synch" with one another. What I need is a way to make
Windows Update "forget" what it thinks it knows about my
configuration, so that it will simply try and download al lthe updates
again.

While all this is going on, I'm making now headway on my projects, so
I am probably just goign to re-format C: and start anew, even though I
really hate that approach, I just don't have all weekend to wait to
find an answer to this. If you have any idea, I sure am open to them.
I'm sure there's just a file soemwhere I need to delete... But I don't
knwo what it is.
