How Much...

I know one can update vista 32bit to 64bit, but I cannot find out HOW MUCH it
costs. Can anyone please advise me how much it costs and approximately how
long it takes to get the disk.

Also, does the ordered version (to upgrade to 64bit) overwrite vista 32bit
or does the new 64bit disk become the only install disk?

Thanks

What version of Vista have you got?

What country do you live in?

Why do you want 64bit Vista anyway? Do you know?

Im considering purchasing Vista with my next computer later this month
(either that or Xp Pro 64). I ultimately want Vista Home Premium 64.

I live in the USA.

I would benefit greatly from 6 to 8 GB of system memory, so a 64bit OS is
for me.

Thank you for your help.

Also, if I decide I dont like the 64bit version, can I go back to the 32bit
version (I dont care if I have to format and reinstall, im concerned about
license key and cost).

Well, as far as I know, it's actually free. If you do not specify to have
the 64-bit version when you order the computer, you can get the DVD from
Microsoft, for a nominal fee.

The licence key that your computer comes with will work on 32-bit and 64-bit
versions of the edition you have.

I think what I said in my previous post may only apply to Retail copies of
Vista. If you cannot specify the 64-bit version when you order, you may
have to buy the full 64-bit version.

I am sure someone else will say is this if this is incorrect.

As you realized, 32 and 64 bit together are only available if retail is
purchased.
For OEM, you get what the OEM provides and that is all.
Microsoft will not furnish anything for those that choose to purchase OEM.
One of the many reasons you pay less for OEM than retail.

Thank you all for your input. Unfortunately, due to the fact that I take
enough medications to knock out a horse, Im having a little problem putting
these responses together (and today is a good day). Here is what I think I
understood from all the replys (for which I am greatly appreciative):

#1). If I buy a new computer with 32bit Vista pre-installed (OEM) I cannot
upgrade to 64bit.

#2). If I buy ANY retail Vista, I can request a 64bit DVD to replace my
32bit DVD AND if I dont like the 64bit OS I can return to the 32bit OS with
the same license key, by formatting and reinstalling. There is a nominal fee
to get the 64bit DVD (but nobody knows how much that is or hasnt said).

If anyone can confirm my understanding, I would greatly appreciate it.

Im a bit upset about OEM not being upgradable to 64bit (if this is correct)
as my 2 favorite PC vendors dont offer any 64bit OS at the moment (outside of
Ultimate).

Thanks again for your continued advise.

Yes, but some vendors will give you the choice to get 64-bit in the first
place. Dell do, for example.

Yes, and the Ultimate Retail package comes with both CDs, so you don't have
to order the other one.

1. Correct, at least not from Microsoft.
The seller may accommodate you but do not count on it.

2. The 64 bid DVD does not replace, you keep both 32 and 64 bit.
You can switch back and forth all you want and move to a different computer
as well.
As long as you have only one installed at a time.
