How much is used P-3 500 computer worth?

Another co-worker of mine claims a P3-500 is a very powerful computer. As
a matter of fact, he told me he uses that, 512MB RAM, and 2 120GB HDs (RAID
setup for performance; split across both drives) for video editing.

It seems to me that I could get along just splendidly with the 500 for
internet and old gaming. Seems like w/ lots of RAM you could run just
about anything.

The only reason I'm even considering this old computer, is because mine is
maxed out at 64MB (all 4 FP SIMMs slots used). I couldn't add any more,
and even if I could, it would probably cost too much.

I priced his most valuable items (he told me he would take 50% off new
retail price), and it seems like I could get the stuff I need (tower, mb,
ram, cpu, 2 hds, cd-rw) for about $60.

It could be where you are at in the world. About a year ago I swapped out a
motherboard and 500 mhz processor for a motherboard that had a 1.4 ghz
processor on it and gave away the 500 mhz processor and motherboard to a
coworker so he could update a second system for his daugher from a 200 mhz
system. At a reacent computer show the computers with 500 mhz processors
and a 4 to gb hard drives were selling for about $ 50 without monitor. They
also had a 10 to 20 speed cd-r in them and 128 meg of memory. They were the
same type systems we swapped out about 300 of at work about 3 years ago.

The system is fine for most home use, but not worth very much on the used
market. A new Compact sysem was in the paper for about $ 300 after the
rebates including a monitor about 2 weeks ago. This is a very low end
system now but will be about 5 or more times faster than the system you are
looking at.

For $60 just take it. It can run almost anything is right, but maybe not the
latest very fast mindless games. My young cousin is using one and he plays
all the games that he ever wants, maybe not lightning fast but adequate for
his use.
