How many Contacts will each Distribution list hold?

G

Guest

1st question: how many contacts will each Distribution list hold.
2nd question: if the distribution list is full, and the list is
alphabetical, can a new contact be added alphabetically? If so, is the last
name on the list moved off the Distribution list to a new Distribution list
that is automatically set up by Outlook?

1) About 120 in an Exchange mailbox or public folder.

2) No.

We entered many more than that, went to save and then realized it could only
hold the 150. How do we transfer the overage to a new distribution list
without deleting and retyping all of them again.

Does File, Save as include the unsaved items? Can also file, print to an
electronic format and use OCR to make them editable so you can copy and
paste.

Outlook has no limit on the number of names/addresses in the DL = this is
normally a limit imposed by your ISP. You would be much better off using
categories to send large numbers of mails to people. Or even mail merge.
Distribution lists are problematic at best and useless at worst.

If you are in a corporate environment, the Exchange admin may have set an
upper limit on the number of names in a DL. If you are, talk to the mail
admin.

Milly,
My ISP said the number of names on any one email DL is 99 and 999 for one
day. I do not have 99 names and I keep getting an OUTLOOK error message not
an ISP error message. There must be a number of names limit in OUTLOOK! I
have a print screen of the error message and it says: An unexpected error has
occurred

is this a pop account? I believe there is a limit - based on character
count. I'm not sure of the size as I don’t send to large DLs.

Diane,
It is a Comcast.net email account I can't remember which is which. I have an
MSN account also, but I've tried both, however this latest error message was
on the Comcast.net account.
So you're saying there is a email limit to OUTLOOK? If so, how do you
increase it?
Thanks for your help.

Can you post the exact text of the message?

The character limit is quite large, I'm sure, but however large it may be,
it can't be changed, to the best of my knowledge.

Bill,
here is the text

Hi All,
Please look at the link for more Reunion information:
http://www.nmcb14alumni.com

Toward that end, a listing of BN personnel is being developed. I am emailing
you because I have my own personal list that I have accumulated over the
years and have tried to keep somewhat current. If you DO NOT want your email
information distributed then please let me know. If you DO NOT want to be on
my email list, also let me know. And MOST IMPORTANTLY if there are names and
data you have on current or former BN members please email their information
Ken Erickson @ (e-mail address removed) with a copy to me @
(e-mail address removed) or call me @ 901-xxx-xxxx.

Also, if you can volunteer any time to help compile the BN
members please let us know. You help is needed so the Alumni Association can
continue to help your fellow FOURTEEN Seabees and shipmates.

So that I know this email didn’t evaporate in cyber space please
just click reply and send it back to me.
Bill,
here you go, message text.

Thanks again for the help.

I thought it was 256KB but that would be a lot more than 100 addresses. It
might be 1024 characters. I've never had to use a DL larger than 10 or 20
names so I've never hit the limit.

Regardless, no, it can't be changed.

Is there any way to display the total number of contacts in a distribution
list? In Outlook Express, the number automatically appears but I can't find a
way to do it in Outlook.
