Word isn't like Excel -- you don't "define a printable area". You go
to File > Page Setup and choose a paper size, and then set the four
margins that are measured inward from the edges of the paper. Word
lays out all regular text (that is, everything except headers,
footers, text boxes, and floating graphics) inside those margins.

While you're working in Print Layout view, you can go to Tools >
Options > View and check the box for "Text boundaries" to have the
locations of the margins appear as faint lines.

To see what will appear on paper, use File > Print Preview. This is
usually but not always the same as what you see in Print Layout view.

You can define the page(s) to be printed. If you want only a part of a page
then you could highlight and copy that text to a new document and print from
that.

To have a look at it first click on <Print preview>.
