How hot before imediate action required?

I have the P4C800E Deluxe MB with a Intel 3.0 CPU. Since I started a
project that maxes out my computer the chip has been running from 55
to 58 degrees C. I suspect a poor connection to my Zalman cooler and
plan to look into this soon. (the MB is running about 37)
Should "soon" be sooner than later? Am I damaging my CPU by running
this hot? The alarm is set at ~72 (the default I think). Will I do
permanent damage if it gets that high.
Thanks for any advice
Ralph

Dude, that's small potatoes. For the last 6 months, my Athlon 2500 has been
running at 82 degrees - It'd shut down twice a day when playing MP3z drove
it to 83. Turned out my HSF was improperly mounted.

You're way in the clear.

Athlons run hotter than Intels, so not really comparable.
Just to be safe check the heatsink, maybe reapply thermal compound.
It could just be poor case design or ambient temps causing higher temps.

55 to 58 doesn't sound too bad (under load I assume). AFAIK CPUs will just
cease to function till they cool down rather than suffer damage. If you were
to run the CPU with no heatsink at all it would probably kill it (about 10
seconds), but where the temp rises gradually to a critical point it should
be ok.

FWIW my Athlon 2500 runs at 55ish under load, but I have an after market
heatsink which took about 15 degrees off of the stock AMD heatsink.

mine aint that bad i guess...wonder what else it could be then? this is
