How exactly would one index a PHRASE?

I read this recently:

"The indexing service in XP indexes your files presumably to shorten the
time needed to search your hard drive if you are looking for a specific file
or part of a phrase inside a file."

Now I can understand how someone using a file in a accounting firm for
example might wish to be able to sort that file alphabetically by last name
or by the largest account moneywise, first. So they create an key for names
alphabetically and one for amounts, largest first. And these keys are stored
in a file called an index file. And away you go. Neat, isn't it?

Note above that you can be "looking for a part of a phrase in a file."

But how would you define/describe and so index your various phrases? I mean
almost any selection of 2 to 20 words, say, could be a phrase. How would you
set up a key or keys for that situation?

This is a .Net Programming group. If this is not a question about
programming, and you want someone to help you, you might want to post your
question to a Windows newsgroup. They are on the bottom of the dropdown
list on the Microsoft Discussions Groups website.

Robin: thanks for your taking the time to send me your reply msg.

Which drop down menu are you referring to? I get to where I can post a
question from www.microsoft.co/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx.
Are you referring to the drop-down menu on this page..where it reads "Select
a Discussion Group"? The menu that starts out
"Accessibility...Basics...Configuration and Management"...and on through the
alphabet ending with "Working Remotely" The closest heading to my Indexing
topic was "General Discussion" which I believe I selected. (I guess I COULD
have unintentionally selected 'Network and the web' Anyhow if this was not
the drop down menu you referred to, where IS the one you had in mind?

The link you posted doesn't work for me. If I change microsoft.co to
microsoft.com, I end up here:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx

which shows the countries on the left, and on the right, "Welcome to
Microsoft Discussion Groups" and a search box.

Can you post the link again, or tell me how you get there? I'd really like
to know, because there are a lot of these posts in this group, and I'd like
to be able to direct people better.

Thanks,
Robin S.

Robin:

"http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx" does
indeed take me to the page showing the countries on the left with "Welcome to
Microsoft Discussion Groups" on the left and a search box on the right.
Leaving out the 'm' of 'com' was my inadvertent error which you realized.

I have tried and tried to determine what I could have done that got my
question posted to .Net Programming group but without finding a definitive
answer. I had thought I had posted it in the General Discussion newsgroup.

Here's one possibility: The drop down menu I referred to beginning
"Accessibility...Basics...Configuration and Management..." is found on the
page where one posts a question...the page where there is a box "Select New
Post" with a drop down menu of 2 choices: 'Question' and 'General Comment'.
When you select 'Question' the resultant screen has a box with the phrase in
it: 'Select A Discussion Group". and when you click its down arrow you get
the "Accessibility...Basics..." etc list. 2 entries there are "General
Discussion" and "Network and the Web"; perhaps I clicked on "Network and the
Web" there inadvertently. Still would THAT have caused my question to be
posted on .NET Programming group? IDK.

I hope this offers some clarification. Please write back if you think I
could help further. IF you should feel a phone call practical, write me at
(e-mail address removed) and suggest a time...I'm retired). I have SkypeOut (my
user name is 'wumply) so any cost would be negligible. I could call you if
you like. I suggest this only because you wrote "I'd really like to know..."
