how does ThunderBird compared to Xnews?

Have anyone used both Xnews and ThunderBird? I love Xnews but
it seems that it is not updated anymore. Try many others but
never find one with the same with vertical split and
keyboarding capacity.... So, how does ThunderBird do on quick
and fast newsreading?

Similar to Agent, Dialog and others, but stick with Xnews. It doesn't
matter that Luu isn't updating at the moment, Usenet still has the same
protocol.

I use Thundebird for SSL servers. Xnews is much better, but I've been
playing around with Pan.

I must be missing something on that setup, because I can't get it
to work. Any pointers?

To connect to the Netscape secure server, something like this should
be in your stunnel.conf:

# stunnel client setup

client = yes

# Service-level configuration

# secnews.netscape.com (204.29.187.156)

[netscapesnews]
accept = 127.0.0.1:1119
connect = 204.29.187.156:563

Then set up Xnews to read from the server using "localhost" or
"127.0.0.1" as the server name, and specify port 1119. You can use
other local IPs or ports if you like; I just chose ones I was not
using.

I prefer to have all the configs in stunnel.conf and to run it as a
service, but it's also possible to run stunnel only when you need to
connect to a particular server. DavidB's help site has quick
instructions for creating a batch file to use Xnews+stunnel with no
..conf stuff to mess with.

I would forsake OEX for something else ... IF ... it were all-inclusive
like OEX. Despite its problems, along with MSIE, I still like the way
it handle reassembling of newsgroup binary parts. The simple
addition of yEnc answers the problem of those files uploaded
with that format.

I like Thunderbird in all respects, except that it has NO prospects in
the near future for dealing with reassembling of binaries, thus I am
stuck with XNews .. which is fine. But, now I am dealing with three
internet clients instead of just two. I fervently wish that Mozilla would
come out with the all-in-one, all-capability client. Now, there would
be the death of MSIE and OEX.

Not a patch on Xnews, but then, what is?

Ditto, I've being playing with Dialog again, but it's so slow, I'm not sure
why.

If you're dealing with large numbers of message headers, make it a
habit to run "File | Compact Database" just before you exit Dialog.
I've found it reduces startup time and dramatically improves
performance. You should always use the check box to keep a backup
copy of your files, just in case. Although I've never had problems
with "compact", I've sometimes clobbered messages or settings and used
that backup copy!
