How do you turn the volume down on an internal PC speaker?

I just upgraded a PC to Windows XP, reformatting as I went. This machine
does not have a sound card, but every time the user does anything the PC
speaker beeps very loudly, e.g. when getting new mail etc; things that if it
had a sound card would play a .wav file or something. This is driving the
user nuts!

How do you turn the volume down on this internal speaker, assuming that
there are a few beeps that may be necessary, e.g. at POST when booting?

Thanks,
Mich

Go to Control Panel, select Sounds and Audio Devices, click on sounds tab,
select the "No sounds" scheme, click OK
