How do you rename a series of pictures?

Hi,
When I transfer images from my digital camera to a folder on the computer,
they are listed with some letters that stay the same followed by numbers
that index by 1.

I would like to rename the series instead of having to rename each
individual file. For example, DSCN1 1.jpg, DSCN1 2.jpg, etc. I want to
change them to, for example, Christmas at Dottie's 2002 1.jpg, Christmas at
Dottie's 2002 2.jpg, etc.

Is that possible? I have ACDSee and windows 9 media player. I have windows
xp.

Thanks in advance for any tips on this.

Nothing to it.
Select all the pictures in the folder by holding the Ctrl key down and press
the letter A. This will highlight all the picture files in blue. Or click on
Edit and then Select All. Same blue highlight of all selected files.
Right click on the first file in the folder and click on Rename on the
opening menu. The original name of the file will open is in blue. Type the
following to replace the original file name:
Christmas at Dottie's 2002 (1).jpg
and press Enter.
All the files are automatically renamed, the first file will be (1), then
(2) etc until the end.
A few things to remember.
1. After you select all the files and you right click, you must right click
on the first file in the folder because renaming will start from the file
you click on.
2. Note in the above name that there is a space between 2002 and (1). You
must have a space between the last character of the file name and (1).
3. When you rename, you must include the extension jpg after (1). I you
don't, XP will warn you. Just make sure that .jpg is added after (1)

Your welcome. If you are actually using the full date/time you don't need
the "###" for the sequential number, unless your camera can take several
pictures per second. Also keeping the date in front is a good long-term
idea, all your pictures will be in order, and that is no small feat.

Yes, multipule folders and am just trying to rename the folders so
they will open in a certain order.

No doubt Yves way to go is the easy way it is amazing so often the answer is
within Windows its self but for some reason Msoft seems to hide it's best
bits it almost seems they want us to spend money on other peoples add-ons!
One thing to remember you must reposition your files before running re-name
also if in future you change the position of even one file it is a must to
re run rename in total there is no short cut!

Microsoft does do a good job of providing the basics. They only go so far
because they have enough anti-trust concerns. The good thing is that when
something becomes mainstream they add it to the OS so that everyone
requiring basic functionality can deal with it in the same way. There will
always be people who think they can do better and so there is room for many
outside solutions. There are many excellent rename programs such as CKRename
and some Image editors have advanced renames as you see later on in the
thread. The Microsoft solution is just the tip of the iceberg. You wouldn't
think there's a hundred ways to rename a file but there are.
