Auto Rename Files

Hi All,

I'm looking for a utility that will auto rename files on the fly. For
example, I have a dozen folders with several hundred jpg image files in each
folder. I want to consolidate all of these files into one folder. However,
when I use Windows Explorer to move the files, it asks for confirmation if I
want to overwrite a file already in the folder with the same filename. The
problem is that even though many of the filenames in different folders are
the same, in most cases the files are actually different images that were
downloaded from the web. It seems that a lot of websites don't bother to
give their images a unique filename, but rather "1.jpg", "2.jpg", etc.

Ideally, the utility would move all files in each folder to the new folder,
while automatically renaming those files with the same filename. After
that, I can use a program like Dup Detector to eliminate the duplicate
images.

I thought of using Lupas Rename 2000 to rename every file in every folder,
so that when I moved them to one folder, there would be no duplicate
filenames.

Are there any file management utilities or graphics programs that would
solve the problem?

Thanx,

================================
Bulk Rename Utility has a function that allows you to add the name of the
file folder as a prefix or suffix to every file in that folder. You would
still have to go through and apply it to each folder, but it should go
pretty quickly. Maybe Lupas has something similar?

A good file manager is all you need.
Select all, choose "move" and choose "Auto rename copied" in the
"options" during the move operation. It's a lot easier to do than to
describe.

I do that often, after downloading a bunch of pictures into my download
folder I move all the new pictures into another folder where lots of
common filenames are already used. TC renames all moved/copied files
that need to be renamed.
Now and then I use Dupelocator to delete the duplicates.

Total Commander is not freeware, but you can download it for free and
use it for free, at least for 30 days or longer depending on your
morals and local laws. In my country it is freeware, or rather nagware
freeware, because you have to do an extra click everytime you reboot.
