How do you format a line to start every time on line 6 col 42? Farther down
the page I want it to start at a different column number.

Are you talking about a drawing line or a line of text? Assuming the latter,
note that "line" and "column" are not positions that you can specify in
Word. If you want your text to have the equivalent of about five lines space
above it, you can format the paragraph as having 60 pts Space Before. And if
you want an indent (or first-line indent) equivalent to 42 columns in 12-pt
TNR, you can set the indent at about 2.75". If you're dealing with a
monospaced font, then the indent would be about 4.13" for 12-pt type or
3.38" for 10-pt. Or you could insert a text box or frame and set it to an
exact position on the page.

If you'll tell us more about what you're trying to accomplish, we may be
able to help more.
