If you are using PowerPoint 2002 or 2003, you can use the transparency color
selection tool from the Picture Toolbar.
Select the image
Click on View => Toolbars => Picture
Then on the picture toolbar click on the icon that looks like a pen poking
into a corner (I don't know why it looks like that). If you hover over the
icon for a few moments, it show say 'Set Transparent Color'.
The select the color of the image that you want to become transparent.
Limitations:
it does not do multiple selections, just one color. Selecting again
replaces the transparent color selected with a different color to be made
transparent
It makes all of that color transparent (even if it is not part of the
background).
It only makes that exact color transparent (not a range of colors).
The better option is to save the image to your hard drive and use a real
image processing program (PhotoShop, Digital Image Suite or even PhotoEitor)
to modify it. Then save it as an image format that will keep the alpha
channel transparency setting (GIF, PNG, etc.). Then re-insert the image
back into PowerPoint.
