How do you create a table of contents using headers?

I have tried using TOC and other tools to mark text in headers but when
trying to generate and up date Table of Contents the Header text does not
display.

Can you take text from headers and generate into table of contents. Getting
desparate please help.

No, you can't include headers in the TOC. Since the header is repeated on
each page, what page number would the TOC point to? And if the text shows
only for a single page, you shouldn't be using a header for it.

As Jezebel explained, a table of contents cannot reference text inside
headers (or footers, for that matter). But note that you can insert a
StyleRef field in the header (or footer) to reference the current
paragraph using a certain heading style. For more, see the
"How to insert a StyleRef field" section of the article at
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/StyleRef.htm .
