How do you clean your computer once it has an infection on it?

Windows XP Professional Service pack 2, My AVG was activated, yet I still
have a fake program on my desktop. I am infected, how do I fix this on my
own?

How are we supposed to know what infection you have, based on the
information in your post?

In my opinion, you should show your computer to a professional if you
value the data stored on your computer. Much of today's malware is very
difficult or impossible to remove successfully.

If you want to try cleaning your computer on your own, start by scanning
your system with /several/ of the better online scanners, such as:
Kaspersky Antivirus (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)
Panda ActiveScan (http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan)

Download HijackThis from www.trendsecure.com. Run it, save a log, and
post the log at one of the many sites that support HJT, such as
spywarewarrior.com, bleepingcomputer.com, and temerc.com -- but not here.

Good luck.

Download and install, and update Malwarebytes and "Spybot Search & Destroy".
Then reboot your computer, and start up in Safe Mode.
Scan your system with the above 2 programs, and your Anti-virus while in
Safe Mode.
All info below.

http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program.
Download, install, update, and immunize your System with it.
Then SCAN with it.
Update it, and scan your System once a fortnight.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Malwarebytes is as the name says, a Malware Remover!
For the Free version scroll down their page to either download from
Download.com, or Major Geeks.com

Download, install, and update.

Important re: Safe Mode
If you happen to find a problem that you can’t uninstall / delete, reboot
the computer, and go into Safe Mode.
To get into Safe mode, tap F8 right at Power On / Startup, and use UP arrow
key to get to Safe Mode from list of options, then hit ENTER.
RESCAN your computer with your Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes and Spybot S & D
while in Safe Mode.

Just a warning if you want to use the Malwarebytes removal tool. While it is a good
product, it will delete anything it finds, permanently, including false positives. I found
out the hard way.

Try as ju.c suggests. Preferably in Safe Mode.

I've documented several issues with MBAM full version and have reported it
to them several bad issues. I am still waiting for a patch.

Stay very, very far away from any advice you read from pcbutts1, who has
been banned from many groups.

Your question is way too vague to answer. We need as much detail as
possible in order to help you. Perhaps the best thing to do is to show
your computer to a professional.

Your reputation in these Newsgroups is finished.
People are laughing at you now!

I ignore garbage.
Get a life, and do some work!
You are here all the time, as you have no real customers to rip off.

"Used it many times and not seen any false positives - what were the specifics of your
false positives?"

I don't remember specifically as it was many months ago, but I'm a programmer, so some of
my self made programs were gone.

I only meant to share my experience. I DO recommend Malwarebytes, a very good company.

Uh-oh!... looks like I'm losing it again lol.
I'm doing the same thing I was doing over in
the Vista groups, and that got me in a lot of
trouble so I stopped it there.
