How do you add "desktop search" to taskbar or sidebar?

I've just spent the last few hours futilely trying to add the native 'Windows
desktop search' to either my taskbar, or the sidebar as a gadget - but to no
avail.

Does anyone have any idea how to provide this obvious piece of ergonomics &
functionality?

I'm VERY suprised that this isn't an 'easy' thing to do...

The replacement for search on the task bar is having search in the start
menu. It's the same number of clicks away - just click or hit the windows
key and start typing your search.

One of the devs in the search team Brandon has a couple of tools and gadgets
available for download - I'm not sure they do exactly what you want but you
might find them interesting: http://brandontools.com/

Can you explain what having search on the taskbar would add for you over the
existing Start Menu search?

I think it would be more ergonomic and easier to use.
To be honest, Dave, I didn't think it would be that hard a thing to sort out.
I'm used to using this kind of search on other OSs, and if I recall
correctly, Google desktop has this kind of functionality - but I would rather
remain 'In House', so to speak, as my experiences from using google desktop a
few years ago showed it to be an awful system hog.

There's no way to do this built-in to Vista. I'm not aware of a third-party
gadget to do this.
