How do set up an XP laptop to for use on and off a Domain ?

I'm looking for how-to information for settup up laptops for use as a
desktop replacement. The user has a dock while in the office and (for
now) works detached when out of the office. Outlook is all on the C
drive, and we use a POP server so that should be easy.

If I join an XP laptop to a domain, will the machine work with a
cached profile when detached ?

Are there are tips or resources I should know about ?

yes the users password will be cached and they will be able to log in when
no network connection is available.
