When XP first came out, you could view jpeg and gif files (frm the same
directory!) in a slide show. Is that still possible, or do I need to use
PowerPoint to accomplish this?

Windows XP does have a screen saver that allows you to pick a folder and
show the pictures in that folder. I has nothing to do with PowerPoint and
can only be used on your computer when the screen saver is active. Is this
what you are looking for? If so, right-click your desktop and select
"Properties". Click the "Screen saver" TAB and click the dropdown and find
the screensaver.

Open Windows explorer and browse to the folder with your pictures.
Right click the first one and choose Open With
Choose Windows Picture and Fax viewer
There ya go.

It probably worked like this automatically when you doubleclicked an image, at
least when you first got Win XP. Since then, some other program has probably
taken over "ownership" of images (whatever program does come up when you
doubleclick images, in fact).
