How do I type accent characters (diacriticals) in my email?

How can one easily type accented characters in an outlook email?

Stangely enough, if the email is a text only, then the MS Word keyboard
shortcuts work, (e.g. ctrl+', o -> ó) But if the format of the email is HTML
then the short cuts do not work. So I am resigned to either composing the
message in Word first then cutting and pasting or just typing the one
character in word and then pasting into the body of the message.

On a related note, is there a way to access something akin to the
Insert>symbol menu of Word? (For the more esoterical diacritics)

I know that one solution is to simple chang my keyboard mapping to a foreign
keyboard, but I would like to avoid that if possible.

I use Shortkeys Lite (http://www.shortkeys.com/lite.htm) for this
purpose. You can use up to 15 shortkey characters to output ä, ö, ü, à,
é, ô, ç, £, ¥, €, etc - whatever you need. For more than 15 chars you
have to use the paid version.

Similar to Word's Insert Symbol functionality you can use the Windows
Character Map, although you have to copy/paste - it does not insert
directly.
