Accents/diacritics won't apply to characters

Hi, I am having a weird problem with my keyboard/key input.

Whenever I want to type a character with an accent, the accen't wont attach
itself to the character but instead is typed out before it. If I wanted to
type Zoë it comes out as Zo¨¨e, and ^_^ would be rendered as ^^_^^.

Earlier today this problem fixed itself, but after a few hours it went back
to its erroneous state. I have checked the Keyboard and Regional settings in
Control Panel and there were no relevant settings there. I have also tried
killing a bunch of new apps I recently started using.

I have no idea what is causing this. Is there some registry setting or
hidden hotkey combination I could use to fix this?

Your help is much appreciated, thank you.

What language version is WinXP (e.g., English-UK)?

What language version is the keyboard (e.g., French-CA)? Have you been
fiddling with keyboard map?

I see no accented characters above. How are you trying to get the
accented characters?

If you don't see the umluat over Zoë, either you need better glasses or you
need to change your Encoding, Ken! <wink>

Forgive the correction, but in this case, it's a diaeresis, not an
umlaut. <g>

Interestingly, in his message, I saw Zoë instead of Zoë. Seeing my
own reply in this thread and seeing your message, I do see Zoë.

But at any rate, if it came out Zoë in my original reply, that was
what he sent. Why I can see it my reply but not his message, I don't
know, but my apology to skrbb.

But it's getting to be the time of year when I do need to get checked
to see if I need new glasses. ;-)

Nit duly picked.

Take a tip from me: "Monovision" and the new-fangled "bifocal" contact
lenses are not suitable for computer monitors...at least the 14" display on
this lappy. <w>

It was certainly a nit. ;-)

Thanks. I've never worn any contacts, and I don't know what
"monovision" is.

I wear regular progressive bifocals, but I take them off when sitting
at the computer (two 23" monitors). I see my screens fine without
them.

Thanks. I've never worn any contacts, and I don't know what
"monovision" is.

Wearing a "distance-only" lens in your dominant eye and a "reading-only"
lens in the other one. Over time, the brain's supposed to "learn" when to
ignore the unneeded input. Doesn't work very well for a left-handed but
mostly ambidextrous person like me!

Thanks for the info. I've heard of that before, but not the name
"monovision."

I'll pass on any form of contact lenses, though. I'm not going to
start with them at this late stage in my life.

I just found out why. I read messages in Agent 5.0 here. I had "Raw
Mode" turned on in Agent. When I turned it off, the problem went away.

I can't remember why I ever used Raw mode, but I won't do it any more.
Again, apologies to skrbb.
