How do I turn off automatic send/receive in Outlook 2003?

I tried Tools > Send/Receive > Send/Receive Settings >Disable Scheduled
Send/Receive.

There is a checkmark beside Disable Scheduled Send/Receive.

Outlook 2003 is still bringing in and sending out e-mail without being asked
to.

No answer is possible. You failed to provide your mail account type and
connection type.

How about 'file' and 'work offline'? Then it sends and receives only
when you tell it to. Not sure if different connections affect this
though. Works for me on home adsl, Outlook 2002.

In "View or change existing e-mail accounts," my MSN.com (and only) account
has the type listed as MAPI (default). I know I entered HTML
somewhere...where in the past I would have entered POP3. The connection type
is cable modem, always on.

I had to have my hard drive reformatted (sober virus) and am reinstalling
programs. Outlook seems to have a mind of its own.

So we've narrowed it down to 3 possibilities? Just look at your account
properties and see. MAPI and HTML are not account types. Account types are
HTTP, POP3, IMAP or Exchange.
