How do I turn off automatic formating in Word?

When setting up documents in Office Word 2003, I go to great pains to get the
formatting (font, size, paragraph, tabs, numbering etc.) exactly as I want
it. Then, when I cut and paste from this or another document, Word often
does me the favor of reformatting the paste as well as the original document.
Is there a button/quick fix somewhere to turn off this irritating "feature?"
