I have a new computer and now with Word 2003 when I open a new document the
gridlines show. I have tried everything to turn them off but cannot find a
solution as to how to.

You can turn off the drawing grid (if that is the grid you mean) from the
drawing toolbar > draw > grid.
You can turn off the table grid lines from table > show/hide grid
and
"Margin marks or crop marks appear on each corner of the page when you
open a document in Word 2002 or in Word 2003"
