How Do I Stop Programs from Starting Up When I Log Onto XP Home Edition?

How do I keep programs from starting up when I log into
Windows XP Home Edition? For some reason my system has
begun loading the Windows Explorer, open to the System32
folder, every time I login.

Second question: What might have caused this to start
happening?
