I have several annoying programs that automaticall start when I start my
computer.
My startup folder is empty. I can't figure out how to prevent these programs
from starting every time I start up windows. Does anyone know why the
start up folder isn't showing these programs that are automatically
starting?

Christopher, are these legimate programs that are starting? If not, you
probably have been infected with Spyware. You can
use a program such as Spyware Sweeper, Spyware Doctor, Spybot Search and
Destroy or Adaware. The last two are
freebee's. You can try going to Start>Run type: msconfig click Ok.
Choose Startup Tab and look for any of those program entries. If there, you
can Uncheck.

A surprising amount of stuff starts up when your computer starts, but often
this is by design and helpful in the longrun. Still, you can check
administrative tool services, or the registry in local machine, software,
microsoft, windows, current version, run
Note that you need to know what you are doing. In some cases, programs
depend on components which were designed to run at startup.
