How do I stop Outlook from repeatedly sending messages?

Yesterday my Outlook out of the blue just started to send multiple messages
repeatedly. I wound up having to use Go Back on it because I couldn't get it
to stop sending. Tonight, the same thing, though this time it gave the
appearance of RECEIVING numerous emails (none of which showed up). Then I
get an IM from a friend, "Why did you just send me 20 emails?".

Meanwhile, when it's doing this stuff, I can't move messages into folders
("Can't move message" is the error message) nor can I remove things from the
outbox that seem to be just sitting there.

I'm doing a huge virus scan, but does anyone have any ideas?

Download Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition, update and scan your
PC for the presence of spyware:

once a week.

What version of Outlook do you have? Were the messages that were being
sent many times large (like was there a large attachment)? What sort of
the connection do you have to the Internet - dial-up or broadband?
